Seen the film now it’s time to #VisitIfYouDare

With the latest Danny Boyle blockbuster, 28 Years Later, a hit at the UK Box Office the region where it was filmed is encouraging visitors to experience the North East for themselves.

Film fans can now book an experience inspired by the epic thriller, which was shot in locations across Northumberland, Newcastle and Durham.

Venture into the shadows of Blackfriars restaurant, a 13th century former Dominican Friary, said to be the oldest dining hall in England, for an unforgettable evening where centuries of rich history collide with the cinematic world of 28 Years Later.

Begin your experience with a zombie-themed cocktail on arrival, followed by a three-course set dinner and coffee in the historic restaurant. Afterwards, join an expert guide for a 45-minute tour through the dark corners of the former friary, a jewel of Newcastle’s medieval past. Tours will take place on Tuesday 12 August/ 9 September/ 21 October at 8.15pm from £45 per person.

Blackfriars’ sister restaurant Dobson and Parnell is also offering A Sip and Survive experience, which includes 3 Zombie inspired cocktails (The Infected, Patient Zero and The Quarantine Zone) with a cheese and charcuterie sharing board from just £34.50 per person.

Up for a challenge? Then book you and your friends on to the Apocalypse Survival Tour on Hadrian’s Wall. Part guided walk, part immersive experience, this unique four-hour adventure reimagines Hadrian’s Wall as the edge of a post-apocalyptic world. Along the way, you’ll face creative challenges inspired by all our favourite survival films and TV. Led by local guides, the tour blends cinematic storytelling, team problem-solving, and Roman history, all set against one of the Wall’s most dramatic landscapes. Prices vary depending on group size, book before July 31 for a 20% discount.

Step into the story with a 28 Years Later inspired Land Rover Defender Survival Road Trip This immersive road trip takes travellers through the wild landscapes seen in the film. Equipped with a rugged Land Rover Defender, adventurers can follow mapped routes to iconic shoot sites, wild camp under the stars, and experience the UK’s most atmospheric terrain off-grid and on their own terms. Prices from £235.

Escape Key Newcastle is also offering 28 codes for £28 off their thrilling plague room. Save the city from an imminent Plague outbreak and feel like your favourite characters in the 28 Franchise!

The North East is also the backdrop for popular TV show Vera and devoted fans can head out on either a full day tour of filming spots in Northumberland or a half day tour in Newcastle. Get behind the scenes and see memorable murder locations, Vera’s home on Lindisfarne and instantly recognisable crimes scenes as well getting the chance to explore the stunning Northumberland coast and city landmarks. Prices for Newcastle tour £42 and Northumberland £80.

Throughout the summer Newcastle Castle will be screening several feel-good films in the medieval setting of their Great Hall. Choose from Mamma Mia on July 19th and Moana on Aug 2nd. Price from £15.
