World’s biggest streetfood competition, the British Street Food Awards, comes to Hackney Bridge on 9th, 10th and 11th September
This September 9th – 11th sees the grand final of the biggest street food competition in the world, the 2022 British Street Food Awards at canal-side venue Hackney Bridge. A celebration of all things street food, the weekend-long event will give visitors the opportunity to try the next big thing in street food and cast their vote on who should win the coveted prize.
With thousands of entries from around the country, the grand final sees 12 finalists compete for the prize and the opportunity to represent Britain at the European awards. Dishes on offer will include Indian street food from Oh Babu, high-end comfort food from Junk, innovative tacos from The Bearded Taco and Sri Lankan kotthu from Kochchi, plus much more. The competition will be judged by a celebrity panel including musician and cookbook author Sophie Ellis-Bextor and actress and cookbook author Fay Ripley. Visitors can enjoy drinks including event sponsor, Cobra beer, and rescued fruit mocktails from Surplus 2 Purpose. Those aspiring to the business can attend an exclusive Street Food Start-Up seminar, with speakers from NCASS, Big Apple Hot Dogs and Sessions food halls.
The British Street Food Awards have a history of discovering the next big thing: Wingmans, winners in 2017, now have 3 standalone restaurants, and other previous winners include Meatliquor and Bao. Alongside the usual Awards, such as People’s Choice, Best Burger and Best Vegetarian, there will be new Awards this year – including the Spice Award, sponsored by Cobra, and the Future Food Legend Award, sponsored by Sessions. The Best Looking, which is a public vote for the UK’s coolest van, truck or trailer, is sponsored by Majisign. The Sustainable Award is sponsored by the Sustainable Restaurant Association.
Richard Johnson, founder of Food Mutiny, says:
“We don’t want a fixed starter-main course-dessert menu any more. We want a bit of this and a bit of that. Flirty, low-commitment dining. Plus it’s inclusive. In a world like ours, that’s a positive message right now.”
Tickets to the British Street Food Awards cost £5 per person and include entry, your vote on the best street food dish and free Cobra beer or rescued fruit mocktail from Surplus 2 Purpose. Tickets are available for Friday or Saturday evenings and Saturday or Sunday daytimes.
