One of the UK’s leading fine-dining restaurants is preparing for a busy weekend during Taste Liverpool. Drink Bordeaux in its historic home on Sugnall Street. And for Chef Patron Paul Askew, bringing Bordeaux Wines back to Liverpool is also personal
Next weekend, Taste Liverpool. Drink Bordeaux takes over the city. In a celebration of all things food and drink, Liverpool will thrive for the four days and nights of the Jubilee weekend.
At The Art School in the Georgian Quarter, Chef Patron Paul Askew and his team are preparing for one of their biggest weekends to date, following on from recently recreating the illustrious restaurant at The Grand National’s Topham House in April, to cooking for the G7 in December and to Paul himself enjoying and reflecting upon his 40 years in the industry. It’s been a particularly busy time for everyone involved at the restaurant as trade grows further into the summer, with the festival heralding a new era for Liverpool’s hospitality industry.
For Taste Liverpool. Drink Bordeaux, Paul has curated a delectable offering for the festival’s Menu Extraordinaire in the Lantern Room and an array of light bites in The Art School Cellars – these are available from Thursday 2nd to Saturday June 4th. Then, on Saturday a civic lunch for the festival takes place in the intimate and beautifully appointed Moriarty Room with Liverpool’s two mayors and delegates from Bordeaux Wine Council attending. Dishes throughout the Jubilee weekend will be paired with Bordeaux wines with red, white, sparkling, rosé and Cremant servings to savour.
Paul says: “I honestly couldn’t be prouder and happier to help bring Bordeaux Wines back to our city in this major way over the Jubilee weekend. This is something I have been working on for a long time with the Bordeaux Wine Council since we had the Bordeaux Wine Festival here in 2018 and 2019. So now, we’re bouncing back and the city is elevating our gastronomic sector even further with this brand-new event – Taste Liverpool. Drink Bordeaux. We’ve got a burgeoning relationship with the team in France and for me this is the perfect opportunity to together really Liverpool and Bordeaux relationship on the map.
We’re not only the sole UK city to host Bordeaux Wines which in itself is huge, but also we’re showcasing our culinary standard and diversity with over 50 other restaurants, bars, cafes and food halls taking part too. We are also over in Martins Bank Building during the festival – it’s a stunning grade II listed space where we have a brasserie and bar and some special events.
There’s an abundance of choice for everyone and we’re very proud of our Menu Extraordinaire at The Art School, which is not just about what we do in the kitchen here but matching our dishes to some wonderful Bordeaux wines. I want people to discover new vintages they fall in love with, with so many accessible bottles which work for so many occasions. We’re all very excited for what is to come.”
