Chef Modou Diagne has opened his debut restaurant, 111 by Modou, located at 111 Cleveden Road in Glasgow’s West End with a five course tasting menu that showcases his stylish and experimental culinary skills. 

The former 111 by Nico venue has been transformed into a new restaurant. Timeless neutrals such as beige, ivory, taupe, black, gray and shades of white are among the colours included into the interior design matched with dark furnishings and fixtures to create a cool, brighter and more airy dining space. Bright green spreading leaves across the restaurant liven up the decor as well as specially commissioned graffiti wall art on the corridors that add color, style and an unexpected dose of excitement to the restaurant. 

The 46-cover restaurant has opened with a reduced capacity of 28 and further features include an open kitchen and stylish, contemporary artwork. 

The twenty-six year old chef offers guests a seasonal tasting menu priced at £30 per person with a matching wine flight at £25 per person and available every Tuesday – Saturday. The menu is an immersive experience where guests create their own food journey with a choice of ingredients for each of the five courses.  

Highlighting local ingredients, guests will choose from either Black Truffle or Smoked Mackerel for the first course; Smoked Ham Hough, Loch Etive Sea Trout or Gorgonzola for the second course and Duck, Grey Sole or Pink Fir Apple Potato for their third course. The fourth is a choice of Confit Lamb Belly, Shetland Cod or Violet Artichoke and the five course tasting menu ends on a sweet note with a decadent dessert of Golden Peach, Perthshire Strawberry or Lemon. There is also an optional cheese course of Tunsworth – a soft, white-rinded cheese – priced at an additional £5.

I’m excited about the journey ahead of us, showcasing great produce and introducing myself to the local community and welcoming new and familiar faces back to the restaurant.”

Earlier this year Chef Nico Simeone (Six by Nico) announced that the popular Glasgow restaurant 111 by Nico was to witness its biggest change to date with his close colleague and friend, Modou Diagne, taking over the reins. 

The uplifting story of hard work and determination meeting hope and friendship captured the heart of the nation as Modou, originally from Senegal, quickly climbed up the ranks from Kitchen Porter to Head Chef, and in March 2020 Chef Nico offering him the opportunity to make his mark in the industry under his own restaurant brand.

111 by Modou marks the next chapter in this inspiring and remarkable story of an 19 year old who came to Glasgow by himself with only £200 in his pocket to look for an opportunity in life. Working with Nico over the years, Modou has played an intrinsic role developing and growing the Six by Nico, Home by Nico and 111 by Nico concepts and menus. 

111 by Modou is open from today, Friday 21st August 2020 at 111 Cleveden Rd, Kelvinside, Glasgow G12 0JU. The restaurant will be open every Tuesday – Thursday from 5pm – 12am and Friday – Sunday’s from 12pm -12am.
