Nieves Barragán & Eneko Atxa cook for Action Against Hunger
Eneko Atxa and Nieves Barragán Mohacho Create Basque Feast for Action Against Hunger
On Wednesday 3 July, Eneko Atxa and Nieves Barragán will host a dinner at Eneko Basque Kitchen & Bar in Covent Garden, with all proceeds from the evening going to Action Against Hunger.
Eneko Atxa is chef and founder of the three Michelin-starred Azurmendi in the Basque Country, as well as Eneko Basque Kitchen & Bar in London. On 3 July, Eneko will cook alongside fellow Basque chef, Nieves Barragán, co-founder of the Michelin-starred Sabor in Mayfair. Both hailing from Bilbao, Eneko and Nieves have been dear friends for many years and have both been instrumental in introducing the now famous Basque cuisine to an international audience.
For this one-off dinner, Eneko and Nieves have collaborated on a nine-course tasting menu, with all dishes inspired by their home region. To start, guests will sample Kaipiritxa, one of Eneko’s signature dishes from Azurmendi. Nieves will then offer Pig’s head croquetas with quince alioli, which will be followed by Beetroot tartare, pickled onions, chives and olive oil caviar – a favourite at Eneko Basque Kitchen & Bar.
The Basque Country is bordered by the Bay of Biscay to the north, and as a result the region’s cuisine has a strong focus on seafood. This is no different in the menu from Eneko and Nieves, which includes Marinated red mullet; Piquillo peppers stuffed with smoked haddock brandade, squid ink sauce; and Diver caught scallops with dashi and ham consommé.
For dessert, Eneko will offer the fruity and floral Rose marshmallow with strawberry sorbet, whilst Nieves’s signature Goat’s cheese ice cream with liquorice will conclude the dinner.
Tickets for the dinner are priced at £95pp, including a welcome drink and the nine-course menu. Guests can also choose to enjoy a bespoke drink pairing, featuring several wines from Gorka Izagirre, Eneko’s family winery in Bilbao. The dinner with wine pairing is priced at £150pp.
All proceeds from the dinner on 3 July will be donated to Action Against Hunger, of which Nieves is an ambassador. Action Against Hunger is a global humanitarian organisation that takes decisive action against the causes and effects of hunger. The charity saves the lives of malnourished children, ensures that everyone can access clean water, food, training and healthcare, and enables entire communities to be free from hunger.
