MUMBAI HEAT HITS FRITH STREET: TANGRA BRINGS BOLD NEW INDO-CHINESE FLAVOUR TO THE LONDON DINING SCENE

This October, Soho welcomes its most exciting new arrival: TANGRA – a bold, day-to-late-night Indo-Chinese restaurant, set to redefine how London dines.

Named after the Tangra neighbourhood of Kolkata – the historic heart of Indo-Chinese cooking – the menu will draw on the legacy of the city’s Hakka Chinese community, who blended traditional Hakka methods with Indian spices and local ingredients to create a cuisine uniquely their own. The culinary style has since travelled and transformed, finding new expressions from Mumbai’s street stalls, Kathmandu’s bustling carts, and far beyond.

TANGRA’s menu is a bold, mouthwatering journey through Indo-Chinese flavours developed by Executive Chef Nikesh Sawantand his creative team, drawing on flavours from India, Tibet, Nepal, and the wider diaspora. Chef Nikesh’s career spans kitchens across India, Dubai, Australia and the UK, most recently as development chef at Mildreds.

Executive Chef Nikesh Sawant said: “TANGRA is food with fire and attitude, shaped by our team’s roots, stories and creativity. We only work with the freshest produce and quality suppliers to make sure every bite explodes with freshness and flavour. From the smokiness of the wok to the punch of chilli and garlic, this cooking is an evolution of Indo-Chinese cuisine for pure enjoyment.”

The menu is designed for sharing and celebrating: at its heart lies an irresistible array of dishes, brimming with deliciously spiced morsels that showcase how indulgent and exciting Indo-Chinese cuisine can be.

Using the finest ingredients, the chefs layer tradition with creativity and innovation, serving up fast, fiery plates showcased in Chilli Paneer Hakko, Himawan Sadeko Chick’n and TANGRA Special Combination Rice, each one bursting with attitude and spice.

Just steps away from Ronnie Scott’s and Bar Italia, TANGRA channels the spirit of Soho itself – buzzing, electric, and unapologetically alive. It’s a restaurant made for nights that don’t want to end, where food, music and atmosphere collide until 1:30am.

TANGRA opens October 2025 with 60 covers, serving lunch, dinner, and late-night eats seven days a week.

For those eager to get a first taste ahead of the official opening, TANGRA is launching Win Your Seat – giving 10 lucky guests the chance to enjoy a feast for four. The red plastic chair, an iconic street-dining symbol across Asia – which will appear in unexpected locations across Soho broadcasted via TANGRA’s Instagram from 17 October.

Guests can play along by guessing the chair’s location, but to enter the competition they must sign up at tangrarestaurant.com//winyourseat.
