Nest in Shoreditch to Close After Nine Years as Team Launches Tavern: A New British Bistro

After nine years, Nest Shoreditch will run its final service on 28th March, with the site reopening in late April as Tavern – an entirely new British bistro concept from the team behind Nest and Michelin starred and Green Star, Restaurant St Barts.

Nest first opened in Hackney in 2018 before relocating to Shoreditch in 2023. It was the first restaurant co-founded by Johnnie Crowe, whose group also includes Restaurant St Barts. Over nearly a decade, Nest became known for whole animal cookery and its monthly changing tasting menu, using produce sourced solely from British small scale farmers and fishermen.

The move to Tavern marks a clear shift in format, moving away from tasting menus and instead focusing on generous, nostalgic British cooking designed for more informal dining.

Kirsty Easterbrook, previously Sous Chef at St Barts, steps into the role of Head Chef and will work alongside Brendan Appleby (Inver, Silo, Lyles), formerly Head Chef of St Barts, who now takes on the role of Executive Chef overseeing the kitchen with Johnnie.

Johnnie Crowe says: “Nest has been a hugely important part of our story for nearly a decade. We are incredibly proud of what it became, first in Hackney and then in Shoreditch. Tavern is about taking everything we believe in about British produce and translating it into a fun way of eating that we all personally love.”

The menu centres on British dishes, beginning with snacks such as puffed pig skin with smoked cod’s roelamb scrumpets with mintTavern sausage with curry sauceLouët Feisser oysters with yuzu kosho, and a rose veal sweetbread burger, signalling a more comforting and relaxed direction.

Larger dishes continue the commitment to British sourcing, from turbot with English sparkling wine sauce and lamb or hogget with anchovy and gem lettuce, to Welsh Wagyu rib of beef with mushroom ketchup and bone marrow sauce, and Tamworth pork chop with cider and mustard.

Tavern takes cues from the spirit of traditional pubs but is positioned firmly as a bistro. Cooking over fire, daily changing dishes and plates designed for sharing will sit alongside nostalgic dessertsand served with classic cocktails and beer on tap.

Tavern will open in the former Nest site in Shoreditch on 28th April 2026.
