Sorted Food Take on Ambitious New Challenge to Discover: ‘How Many Cooks Spoil the Broth?’

Will Murray

YouTube food stars Sorted Food have shared their latest foodie quest – to unravel the proverbial saying  ‘too many cooks spoil the broth’ and in their unique, highly amusing style, reveal exactly how many cooks does it actually take to spoil a broth.

The newly released stunt shows the team roaming the streets of London with a hot-pot of chicken broth in their arms visiting some of the capital’s best restaurants and chefs asking them to add the ingredient they think will be the perfect addition to the dish.

In the first challenge of its kind, Sorted Food co-founders (and non-chefs), Barry and Mike, spend 24 hours calling on 18 of their foodie friends from across the London food scene, asking them to each put their influence on the broth – crucially without spoiling it!

Atul Kochhar

The hilarious 40 minute video sees them visit a host of the capital’s venues and famous faces from Michelin starred restaurants AngloThai & Hide, celebrity chef Atul Kochhar, Gordon Ramsay’s latest fine-dining opening High, an old school East End café plus social media foodie influencers Ben Slater and Jemma Wilson from Crumbs and Doilies bakery in Carnaby Street (full list below). Each are tasked with making an addition to the broth that will positively add to its flavour.

The ingredients line-up mirrors the global influence from the contributing chefs, ranging from malt vinegar to Kombu powder, black cardamom, Bouquet Garni, bonito flakes, sausage, and even chilli oil.

After more than a day on the road (in an hilarious tiny bubble car), the almost-finished broth is taken back to the highly acclaimed Fallow restaurant, where Head Chef Will Murray adds the final ingredient – mushroom garum. It is then judged by a trio of Fallow’s chefs who were given the job to decide if it was spoilt or servable…the verdict – servable!

However, the chefs are unanimous in agreement that nothing else should be added to the broth. So, the answer to the question ‘how many chefs does it take to spoil the broth’? – 19!

Sorted Food co-founder Mike Huttlestone, comments, “This has to be one of the craziest and most fun challenges we’ve ever taken on, and we’re so grateful to all the chefs and restaurants that took part. We did a real tour of London’s finest food scene, and it was all worth it as now we finally know the answer to that well-known saying – it takes 19 chefs to spoil the broth!”.

The 40 minute video has had over ¼ million views within two days of going live, with more than 85,000 hours of watch time and an extra 250,000 views across Sorted’s social media accounts. It can be viewed here: EXACTLY how many cooks spoil the broth: an epic chef experiment
