Notes Coffee takes first prize at speciality coffee competition on International Coffee Day 2019

Notes Coffee is proud to announce a big win for its Laurina coffee, which took first place at the Mercanta Coffee Hunters Speciality Coffee Competition in celebration of International Coffee Day 2019 on 1 October at the Brazilian Embassy in London.

The event brought together participants from across the hospitality industry, with diplomats, embassy staff and officials from the International Coffee Organisation all tasting coffee from 10 competitors before voting for their favourite.

Notes’ winning coffee, Laurina, took the coveted gold with its canned peaches and cotton candy flavours. The caffeine content in the seeds ranges from 0.4-0.75%, almost half of the 1.2-1.6% common in other arabic cultivars. This low caffeine content makes the plants very delicate so cultivation is complex and difficult, requiring great agility and care during processing and milling.

Notes co-founder, Fabio Ferreira, commented:

“We are so proud to take home this award for our Laurina coffee. Laurina is grown on a farm known as DaTerra, in Minas Gerais, Brazil, a country which produces around a third of all the coffee grown worldwide, so to gain this recognition is truly special for the farmers and for Notes. DaTerra was the first farm in Brazil to become Rain Forest Alliance Certified and the first in the world to reach Level A status. Sustainability and ethical sources are subjects close to our hearts at Notes so we’re honoured to see this commitment to great coffee and great farming recognised amongst such fierce competition.”
