TekSalt™ Transforms How Food Manufacturers and Food Service Approach ‘Low Salt’

New mineral-rich salt innovation enables sodium reduction without compromising taste, challenging long-standing trade-offs between health and flavour.

Cornish Sea Salt has launched TekSalt™, a next-generation mineral-rich sea salt designed to change how the food industry approaches sodium reduction, enabling manufacturers and foodservice operators to reduce sodium while maintaining flavour and product quality.

For decades, sodium reduction in processed foods has been defined by compromise. Reformulation has typically meant sacrificing taste to meet public health targets, leaving many “low salt” products perceived as inferior.

TekSalt™ is designed to remove that trade-off.

Rather than relying on first-generation solutions such as potassium chloride substitution, TekSalt™ uses natural sea salt crystals coated in a mineral-rich brine from the Cornish Sea Salt Co, creating a naturally balanced mineral profile including calcium, potassium, and magnesium. This enhances flavour perception and delivers higher taste intensity even at lower sodium levels, supporting sodium reduction while maintaining sensory performance and avoiding the bitterness and metallic notes often associated with potassium-based alternatives.

This marks a shift from simple substitution to mineral-led formulation, restoring balance within salt itself rather than replacing sodium in isolation.

Early adoption within UK food manufacturing demonstrates that TekSalt™ integrates easily into existing formulations, supporting sodium reduction without major reformulation.

In development kitchen trials within major UK food manufacturers, TekSalt™ has demonstrated significant potential for salt reduction across a range of applications while maintaining expected flavour profiles. In one instance within savoury pastry applications, salt was reduced by up to 20% in a flagship product without compromising its established taste. In separate development kitchen work within a leading UK food manufacturer, TekSalt™ has supported salt reductions of up to 50% in selected formulations.

For foodservice operators, TekSalt™ provides a versatile seasoning solution across applications, delivering consistent flavour while supporting healthier menu development.

In independent taste testing, 90% of foodservice professionals preferred TekSalt™ over leading potassium-based low-sodium salts, citing improved flavour, reduced bitterness, and better mouthfeel.
